Arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive orthopaedic surgery of a joint used for the treatment of damage. During this surgery, an arthroscope is inserted into the joint through a small incision. Beside this, an arthroscopic procedure can also be performed to diagnose many orthopaedic conditions such as torn cartilage and torn surface cartilage.

Arthroscopic surgery procedure is usually performed under spinal or local anaesthesia. Your orthopaedic surgeon will make few small incisions on the side of the joint and an arthroscope and other instruments are placed into the incisions. Now, the damaged tissue will be cut, removed, or sometimes sewed, with the help of these tools. Finally, the arthroscope is removed and the incisions are sutured closed.

You will be advised to take rest and elevate the joint while applying ice packs to minimize pain and swelling for a few days after the arthroscopic surgery. An exercise program will be started gradually. It is an essential part of the recovery process. However, it will take several weeks to complete recovery after arthroscopic surgery.

Complications of arthroscopic surgery may include infection, phlebitis, excessive swelling or bleeding, damage to blood vessels or nerves.
