Patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome should undergo Norwood procedure, which is a three-stage heart surgery. It can be said that Norwood procedure is an advanced and modified Fontan procedure. The several Norwood indicationsinclude mitral atresia, left heart syndrome and other conditions that lead to single ventricle circulation.

In this condition, the heart fails to pump sufficient blood to the systematic circulation in the body. The ultimate objective of the Norwood procedure is to connect the systematic circulation to the single ventricle.

The Norwood surgery is divided into two main steps that include providing systematic circulation and providing pulmonary circulation. Pulmonary circulation is done with a modified Blatock-Taussig and sano Shunt. The overall idea is to create functional systematic circuit in those patients having hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
