When a baby is born and takes his first breath, gradually the ductus arteriosus which is no longer required starts getting closed. When this does not get closed or partly remains open, the normal blood flow is affected. This is a condition which is known as PDA.
Medications can help close the PDA, but if not, then heart cathertization is required. A catheter is inserted through the child’s groin or neck into the artery and is then threaded to the child’s heart. The closure device in PDA is a small mesh like metal that looks like a short tube with different-sized discs on both its sides. While the tube portion connects to the PDA, the disc opens on the other side. In the process the PDA closure is done.
