Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a minimally invasive surgery commonly used to eliminate kidney stones. During the PCNL procedure, a small cut or puncture is made on the skin near the kidney through which a needle is passed on the kidney.
The needle helps guide a wire into the kidney, on which dilators are later embedded. The dilators help dilate the tissue through which a nephroscope is passed to take the stones out.
In case of big kidney stones treatment, the stones are first crushed with the help of an ultrasound. The crushed pieces are later removed with the help of the same nephroscope.
PCNL surgery is a complex procedure that has several risks associated with it. Some of the common PCNL complications include possibility of an injury to the nearby organs including lungs, colon and blood vessels and increased chances of infection, sepsis and bleeding.
