When excess fluid on the brain accumulates, VP shunt surgery is required. VP stands for Ventriculoperitoneal Shunting. A VP shunt is a medical device that aids to relieve pressure on the brain caused by cerebrospinal fluid.

This cerebrospinal fluid acts as cushion that helps to protect the inside of your brain from any kind of injury. The fluid flows to the base of the brain through the ventricles. The fluid acts by bathing the spinal cord and the brain and later gets reabsorbed into the blood.

Now, when any kind of injury or damage to the brain causes disruption in the normal flow of fluid, it creates harmful pressure on the brain’s tissues. VP shunt surgery is needed to divert the fluid into another channel away from the brain and at the same time restore absorption of cerebrospinal fluid and normal flow of the fluid.

VP shunt symptoms are seizures, large head size, irritability, headaches, incontinence, memory loss, poor appetite, excessive sleepiness, impaired vision, poor coordination, incontinence and cognitive delays. VP shunt procedure takes up to one and half hours and VP shunt recovery takes at least three to four days.
