Mastectomy procedure involves the surgical removal of breast tissue affected by cancer. It is the most common form of breast cancer surgery in which a part of or complete breast is removed to eradicate the cancer cells. The decision to conduct partial or total mastectomy lies with the breast cancer surgeon.

Some women are advised to undergo double mastectomy, which involves removal of both the breasts. This is especially advised to women who are at an increased risk of cancer relapse or second cancer.

During mastectomy surgery, the patient is administered general anaesthesia before the surgeon removed the affected breast tissue and the nearby lymph nodes. Typically, the areolas and the nipples are also removed during the surgery because there are chances that the cancer may have spread to these regions as well.
