Pushkar Fair is one of India & most iconic and vibrant festivals, held annually in the town of Pushkar. Considered one of the holiest towns in Hinduism, home to the only Brahma temple in the world. A Cultural and Livestock Extravaganza, the fair has evolved into a grand cultural spectacle that attracts thousands of tourists from across the world. Rooted in tradition, the fair has been celebrated for centuries and is deeply intertwined with rural Rajasthani life. Historically, it served as a marketplace where farmers and traders from surrounding regions gathered to buy and sell livestock, especially camels, cattle, horses, and goats. The event coincides with the Kartik Purnima (full moon) in the Hindu lunar month of Kartik a time considered highly auspicious for pilgrimage and rituals.
The fair is not just about cattle trading. Over time, it has transformed into a colorful celebration of Rajasthani culture, featuring:
- Camel races and beauty contests (for camels!)
- Traditional folk music and dance performances
- Turban tying competitions, moustache contests, and other quirky events
- Handicrafts and local art bazaars
- Hot air balloon rides offering panoramic views of the desert and fairgrounds
- It has also become a major platform for promoting rural handicrafts and indigenous skills
