An ORIF (open reduction internal fixation) is an orthopedic surgery conducted to fix a severe bone fracture or break. It is an open surgery done to realign the bone fracture into the normal position with the help of steel rods, screws or plates. The goal is to keep fractured bone stable in order to heal the right way and to help prevent infection. Sometimes, ORIF can also refer to the repair of a joint, such as a hip or knee replacement surgery.

ORIF procedure is done under general anesthesia. An orthopedic surgeon will make an incision at the site of the injury, and the fracture is carefully realigned or the joint is replaced. Finally, the screw, plates or the steel rod is installed, and the incision is closed with stitches. The installed hardware can be permanent or temporary. Temporary hardware will be removed once the healing is completed.

ORIF recovery is quite painful and you should take the prescribed medications strictly.  You will need a physical therapy after the orthopedic surgery. Possible complications of ORIF surgery may include infection, bleeding, blood clot and reaction to general anesthesia.
