Abdominoperineal resection procedure is a surgical intervention used to remove the anus, rectum and sigmoid colon from the body of the patient. This is primarily done in patient who suffer from the cancer of the anus or the lowermost part of the rectum.

All the three parts are removed during abdominperineal resection because the colon rectum and the anus are close connected. Any one part affected by cancer is likely to affect other two parts as well. For example. Cancer of the anus can spread to rectum and then colon.

Most often after the removal of the colon, rectum and the anus, a colostomy is created. It is a hole which is surgically created to remove the waste material from the body of the patient directly from the colon, since the patient does not bear an anus any more.
